• The man from the coast of the great water with many small old hamlets,
• where the green-legged female of the crested egret
• calls out lovingly in the palmyra tree there,
• dolefully(?), embracing [her] young ones, suffering
• without having tasted soft prey [still] at a time when night falls,
• as the cock has been caught in the pretty net with fine strings
• of the tawny-headed youngsters with rich fish for [their] food
• who had gone to the fields [early in] the day[FNote_103], with dark muddy mire,
• --- even before he came alone, with a heart that does not leave off,
• to the seashore grove with flowers perishing on the Puṉṉai trees joining the backwaters,
• [and] united with us --- what [is this], friend? ---
• my eyes have taken a colour like gold,
• abandoning [their] glorious integrity, resembling the sapphires
• of big cool blue water-lilies that have come to bloom for bees to eat
• in the front ghat of Toṇṭi, with [its] extension of clear waves,
• [belonging to] Kuṭṭuvaṉ of victorious battle, with white-tusked elephants.
