தண் கயம் பயந்த வண்காற் குவளை

- the Kuvalai flower of fertile stalk (குவளைப்பூ) which grew in the cool tank.

மாரி மாமலர் பெயற்கு ஏற்றன்ன

- that blue flower that blossomed in winter and received the rains

நீரொடு நிறைந்த பேரமர் மழைக்கண்

- from the cool big eyes which seem to be at strife with each other and killed with water

பனிவார் எவ்வம் தீர the distress of shedding tears to vanish.

இனி வரின் நன்று

- if he returns now it would be good.

- alas ! he has not returned (what shall we do?)

தெறு கதிர் ஈரம் நைத்த நீர் அறு நனந்தலை

- the extensive area which is devoid of water as the scorching rays have distroyed moisture

அழல் மாய்ந்து உண்ட நிழல் மாய் இயவின்

- in the ways where shadow has vanished as the fire has consumed the vegetation

வறல் மரத்தன்ன கவை மருப்பு எழிற் கலை

- the beautiful stag which has forked horns like the branch of the dried up tree

அறல் அவிர்ந்தன்ன தேர் நசைஇ ஓடி

- having run desirous of water mistaking the mirage which glitters like water

புலம்பு வழிபட்ட உலமரல் உள்ளமொடு

- with a perturbed mind due to being lonely.

மேய் பிணைப் பயிரும் மெலிந்து அழிபடர் குரல்

- the feeble voice which is expressive of distress and which decreases becoming weak

அருஞ்சுரம் செல்லுநர் ஆள் செத்து ஓர்க்கும்

- hear attentively thinking it to be humain voice

திருந்து அரை ஞெமைய பெரும் புனக் குன்றத்து

- in the hill with big forms and nēmai (ஞெமைமரம்) trees of perfect trunks

ஆடுகழை இரு வெதிர் நரலும் கோடுகாய் கடற்ற காடு இறந்தோர்

- our talaivar who went beyond the forest situated in the mountain sides whose peaks are burning with heat where the big bamboos having waving stems make a rattling sound.
