பகல் வந்து பெயர்ந்த வாள் நுதல் கண்டு
- on seeing your harlot of bright forehead who came in the daytime and returned to her place.

NOTES

The incident referred to in line 3-8 is as follows : - pāṇaṉ who was well skilled in wrestling and his opponent āriyapporunaṉ wrestled; the shoulders of porunaṉ were caught in the hands of pāṇaṉ and separated from the body and he lay dead. On seeing him dead Kāṇayaṉ was ashamed. Kanayaṉ who is mentioned here must be a friend of porunaṉ or must have sworn that porunaṉ would win.

திறன் வேறு கிடக்கை means lying dead life having expired

ஒழிந்த கிடக்கை The body lying without the shoulders.

If தோட்கையகத்து had been the reading we can interpret that pāṇaṉ died being caught in the hands of āriyapporunaṉ; then Kaṇayaṉ should be taken to be the friend of pāṇaṉ.

மடவோய் this is how the harlot addressed talaivi.

For நுங்கை nacciṉārkkiṉiyar gives the meaning as friend.

மணி stands for a ring set with precious stones.

தொடுதல் wearing; "நறா விதழ் கண்டன்ன செவ்விரற் கேற்பச்; சுறா ஏறு எழுதிய மோதிரம் தொட்டாள்'' (Kalittokai, 84-22-23); ""மணி நாம மோதிரம் தொட்டு'' (cīvakacintamani. 1040)

By பகல் வந்து பெயர்ந்த is meant that the harlot came to be seen by many without any sense of shyness. By mentioning that she rubbed gently the forehead and tresses of talaivi, behaved without showing any respect to talaivi.

The friend took upon herself feeling shameful for the behaviour of the harlot when actually it was talaivi who felt ashamed. Noble sould will feel ashamed of the bad behaviour of other people.

The inner meaning of the description of the otter if that talaivaṉ caused the whole village to indulge in public gossip by his living with the concubines at night and coming to his own house in search of talaivi.
