• (My mind)! The path in the desolate curam which is severely hot as the moisture had dried (9)
• where the bereaved stag of twisted horns (5)

• lies sleeping with agony like the people on whom the vēl has pierced (8),
• as its young ones of small and large sizes play by its side (4)
• (unaware of the misfortune that had befallen them), thinking of its loving deer which died by the arrow shot by hunters of angry looks having reddish arrows with blood stained ends (2)
• and a strong speedful bow on which the beautiful string was fixed by passing the fingers over the beautiful rim (1),
• is in such a condition; what greater suffering will the eyes of our loving wife whose tresse of hair have been adorned fully with flowers (14)
• which are sought after by bees desirous of honey, thinking that they resemble the bright flowers in the beautiful mountain pools of clear water, undergo shedding tears, than ourselves who are crossing (that way in the desert) all alone ?

(நெஞ்சே)! நம் காதலி கண்கள்(14) பாழ் சேர் அத்தம்(9) எமியம் நீந்தும் எம்மினும்(10), பனிவார்ந்து என்ன ஆம் கொல்(11)? துணை உள்ளிப்(3) புண்கண் கொண்ட இரலை(5) நோய் கூர்ந்து(6) கிண்ணீர் உண்ணாது(7) இணைந்து கண் படுக்கும்(8) அத்தம்(10)

விளிம்பு உரீஇய விசை அமை நோன் சிலை

the strong speedful bow whose rim is rubbed with fingers and to which the string was tied

செவ்வாய்ப் பகழி

- arrows with reddish ends

செயிர் நோக்கு ஆடவர்

men with wrathful looks.

கணை இடக் கழிந்ததன் வீழ் துணை உள்ளி

- thinking of its loving deer which was killed by the arrow aimed at it.

குறு நெடுந் துணைய மறி புடை ஆட

as the young ones of short and long sizes were playing by its side as they did not realise the misfortune

புன்கண்கண்ட திரி மருப்பு இரலை

the grieved stag of twisted horns.

மேய் பதம் மறுத்த சிறுமையொடு நோய் கூர்ந்து

its grief being increased together with its refusal to graze its food of grass.

நெய்தல் படுவில் சில் நீர் உண்ணாது

- and also not drinking the little amount of water in the small pit in the saline land

எஃகுறு மாந்தரின் இனைந்து கண் படுக்கும்

- lies sleeping with agony like people pierced by a lance (arrow)

பைது அற வெம்பிய பாழ்சேர் அத்தம்

the desolate path in the desert without moisture

எமியம் நீந்தும் எம்மினும்

- than us who are crossing that path all alone.

பனி வார்ந்து

- shedding tears

என்ன ஆம் கொல்

- what greater amount of sorrow they will undergo!

தெள் நீர் ஆய் சுனை நிகர் மலர் போன்ம் என

as they resemble the bright flowers in the mountain pool of clear water.

நசைஇ வீ தேர் பறவை விழையும்

- desired by the bees which search for flowers having desired honey

போது ஆர் கூந்தல் நம் காதலி கண்

the eyes of our loving wife who has tresses of hair fully adorned with flowers.

மறி புடை ஆட : this phrase may mean that the youngs ones were playing by the side of the dead mother deer

Talaivaṉ spoke to his mind to explain the distress caused to him by saying what greater suffering the eyes of our loving wife will undergo who is staying having parted from us than ourselves who are undergoing suffering by travelling in the cruel curam having parted from talaivi
