- The chief of the country (7),
- where the vēṅkai (வேங்கை மரம்: east indian Kino tree) of tall trunk
which grows by the side of the hill and whose branches which were used to suspend the swing
for the ladies wearing bright bangles where bunches of flowers were very close (5),
- and which were chopped off (5),
- who protected the long ears of corn of green tiṉai (தினை: millet) covered by a growing sheath (3)
- in the dampness of the abundant rains which washed the charred place (2)
- in the extensive farm where unnecessary things were burnt by the hunter wearing slippers (1),
- appear like the crest of the young peacock (7),
- bathed with us on many days like the male elephant joining with its female (11),
- in the sweet crystal water of the shining mountain pool (10)

this should be taken as the branch that grows straight perpendicularly
As the branches that were helpful for the girls as swing when they kept guard over the millet farm,
have been chopped off, the friend hinted that they would no longer guard the farm.
கஞலிய, அயலது: both these epithets qualify வேங்கை.
இறும்பு is put in apposition with சோலை or it may mean thicket within the grove
the clitic உம் has been dropped in குரங்கு due to the demands of metre;
this means that monkeys are clever in climbing up trees to the extreme height.
The subject for பெருகி should be supplied; i.e. the incident of talaivaṉ bathing with talaivi.
By saying "What is the reason for the idle talk ?" the friend meant that talaivaṉ should marry talaivi as early as possible.
