NOTES

ஒறுத்தல் - here means punishing by words; admonishing by speaking harsh words.

For நிறுப்ப: we have to supply `kind words' which is the opposite of harsh words. It is the duty of relations to give advice in both the ways; so talaivaṉ said, "Am I not your relation?" The talaimakaṉ who was misled by signs other than his own, thought that talaivi was rare to get; so he advised his mind `Do not go there; stay here ! Though advised by him in this way his mind did not listen to his words and went after talaivi; so he spoke like this;

நன்னாட்டுள்ளது - is an epithet qualifying கல்லளை

அருப்பம் is the word from which the end அம் - is removed.

அருப்பம் - forest used as defence.

மேவார் - is a common word denoting enemies who are petty

செரு - battle fought with kings.

Though there is a gloss for the word செல் - as மேகம், thunder is more appropriate as it is used as a simile for destroying enemies. thunder; ""செறுநர்த்தேய்த்த செல்உறழ் தடக்கை'' (tirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai, 5);

தொடா - not dug; the mountain pools are natural depressions in the mountains into which water flows; that is called poykai; poykai - a reservoir of water not dug by human effort
