TRANSLATION
- If our lover has the strength of mind to live separtely (3)
- having decided to part from us though we are suffering from acute distress (2),
- the forehead and the beautiful eyes to grow sallow (1),
- after halting for a little while in the desert paths where the blowing wind (8)
- collects and whirls the dust that rises in the cruel places, where the bullocks (7)
- drag the carts, and are harnessed by straight ropes to the bending yokes (6)
- by the salt-sellers who divide the weight equally on both sides,
and match the bullocks for their bells to produce sound (5)
- in the small village which has beautiful dwelling places of huts of conical tops (4),
- will he go, crossing the many mountains whose peaks are covered with snow,
which has dried-up mountain springs where the tigress enters and gives birth to cubs (13)
- in the thicket in which the cloud seems to be slumbering (12)?

NOTES
பூங்கண்: it may mean also eyes resembling lotus.
"பகல் இயைந்து பணித்த பகடு', எனவும், "மணி இயம்பப்பகடு அயாக் கொள்ளும்' எனவும் கூட்டுக
பகல்- the central point in the yoke.
பகல் இயைதல் choosing the bullocks which will be matching each other on both sides of the yoke,
as to divide the weight equally between them.
If we take பகல் to mean daytime the meaning will be that the bullocks take rest in daytime.
For அயாக் கொள்ளும் - the new commentators have given the meaning as dragging with great strain.
It is better to take it to mean the bullocks are resting.
எறி வளி சுழற்றும் - means the whirlwind.

வெரிந் ஒடிக்கும் - stretching its back to its full length.
