NOTES
The loud sound produced by muḻavu when it is played on at a high pitch
is compared to the noise of thunder;
""திருமழை தலைஇய இருள் நிற விசும்பின், விண் அதிர் இமிழ் இசை கடுப்பப்,
பண் அமைத்துத், திண்வார் விசித்த முழவொடு (malaipaṭukatām, 1-3)
For the adjectivel participle பொழிந்த we have to supply the subject "மேகம்'
அரவின் பைந்தலை இடறி: Talaivaṉ coming at night kicking the head of the cobra
suggests the dense darkness and his coming unmindful of the dangers in the ways.
பைந்தலை If taken as a changed of form of the word பைத்தலை
then it will mean the head of the snake with a hood.
அகல வளைஇ - may be split into அகல அளைஇ; அளைஇ will mean having mixed with us.
There is a variant reading in .7-8."முனிதோறு இற்றாகுரல்';
the meaning for that is everytime he dislikes, it is of this nature!
The new commentators have adopted the reading தெற்றாகுதல்; but தெற்று will not mean clearness;
it should be read as தேற்று as there is no difference between short and long letters in palm-leaf manuscripts.
கடுஞ்சூல் - the first pregnancy; as it is attended with acute labour pains it is called so;
""கடுஞ்சூல் முண்டகம் முதற்சூலையுடைய கழிமுள்ளி'' (ciṟuppāṇaṟṟuppatai, 148);
"கன்னியாய் நின்று அரும்புதலின் கடுஞ்சூல்' (special commentary for that line by nacciṉarakkiṉiyar)
The male elephat shampoos with its trunk the female which has given birth to a calf, in order to remove its weakness
முயங்குதொறு முயங்க Instead of splitting it as முயங்கு தொறும் உயங்கி - we can split it as முயங்குதொறும் முயங்கி;
it may be interpreted as embracing without stopping.
According to the tuṟai "தோழி சொல்லெடுப்பத் தலைமகன் சொல்லியது will mean:
when the friend began "நற்கு அறிந்தனமாயின்'' and before she could finish it, talaimakal replied thus :
""நாடன் மார்பினை அவன் முயங்குதோறும் முகிந்து கொண்டு அடக்குவம்''.
The inner meaning of the description of talaivaṉ's mountain is this :
The female elephant after giving birth to a calf sleeps in the hill on which clouds traverse,
being shampooed by its male, denotes that talaivi desires that she should become a mother in the wealthy mansion
of talaivaṉ and should perform hourse hold duties to be praised by talaivaṉ.
