TRANSLATION
- Wavering mind (6)!
- As you have understood that pleasure and pain, the act of uniting and separation (1)
- are of varying natures (3)
- just like the bright daytime and night (2)
- and are dissymetrically opposed to each other (3-4),
- is it proper for you (6)
- to go into the paths of the unpleasant curam (5)
- leaving this lady (4),
- being goaded by the good ambition of acquiring wealth (5) ?
- If you had decided definitely to go into the desert tract (7)
- will you remember us (8)
- at least for a little while (7)
- after having gone beyond the forest in which bamboos grow densely (19).
- That forest has ways where the robbers who killed travellers without pity (17)
- after following them feel sorry only for the loss of their arrows, in the branching paths (16).
- There the crows which have the colour of the dark cloud and eyes as blue as the sapphire (15)
- perching on the trees (14)
- eat with relish the fresh fat of the fallen corpses lying (16)
- in the paths. Those trees whose banches are dried up and have anthills round their trunk (14)
- grow in the high places of rocks where slough with beautiful lines cast off by snakes are found (13)

NOTES
Day and night are compared to pleasure and pain, the act of uniting and separation -
as they come one after the other in quick succession.
இன்பமும் இடும்பையும் மாறு எதிர்ந்துள, பிரிவும் புணர்வும் மாறு எதிர்ந்துள:
This is how it should be taken. The act of uniting and the pleasure derived from it,
separation and the distress resulting from it : this is also another way of interpreting the first line;
Then we have to take that pleasure and pain are respectively like day and night.
Talaivaṉ told his mind "You who are enjoying pleasure in the company of talaivi,
will certainly suffer from pain if you part from her"
துணிவு - resolution; it may also mean clearness.
The skin cast off by the snake is compared to the mountain stream;
this simile is found in Kuṟuntokai; ""பாம்பின், தூங்குதோல் கடுக்கும் தூ வெள்ளருவி'' (235-1-2).
The variant reading in line 8 "நினைதலும் நினைதியோ - is a better one
as such usages are found in the following,
""இனியான், உண்ணலும் உண்ணேன் வாழலும் வாழேன்'' (Kalittokai, 23-6-7);
""கறைமிடறு அணியலும் அயிந்தன்று'',
""அவ்வுருத் தன்னுள் அடக்கிக் கரக்கினும் கரக்கும்'' (puṟam - 1-5, 7-8);
""இயங்கலும் இயங்கும் மயங்கலும் மயங்கும்'' (cilappatikāram, 22-154);
""சுழலலும் சுழலும், ஓடலும் ஓடும்'' (maṇimēkalai 3-110-111, 113).
