பாழ்படு நனந்தலை(5) இவள் வயிற்(10) பிரிந்தனிர் அகறல் சூழின்(11), நுமக்கு(12) அரும் பொருள்(11) எய்துக(12); தாங்குரும் மதுகையள்,(13), மெல்லியன், இளையள், நனிபேர் அன்பின்ள்(14); (ஆகிய இவள்) ""செல்வேம்'', என்னும் நும் எதிர்(15) ""ஒழிவேம்'' என்னும் ஒண்மைஇவள்(16) (என்செப்வேன்)!

சுணங்கு அணி நல் நிறத்து எழுந்த வனமுலை

- beautiful breasts which rise in the chest and are adorned with yellow spots.

சுரும்பு ஆர் கூந்தல்

- tresses thronged by the bees.

பெருந்தோள்

இவள் வயின் பிரிந்தனிர் அகறல் சூழின்

- if you think of parting from this lady and leaving her here.

நுமக்கு அரும் பொருள் எய்துக

Let rare wealth come to you.

கொய்குழைத் தளிர் ஏர் அன்ன

- like the tender and beautiful leaf that has been just plucked and can fade quickly

தாங்கரும் மதுகையள்

- she is one who cannot bear the pangs of separation

மெல்லியள் இளையள்

tender and young lady

நனி பேர் அன்பினள்

she has very great attachment (towards you)

செல்வேம் என்னும் நும் எதிர்

- when you say, `I shall part from you; as a reply

ஒழிவேம் என்னும் ஒண்மை இலள்

- she has not the wisdom to say, `I shall put up with the separation and stay here !

Notes மணிவாய் - mouths, as red as ruby;
""கடல் அம் காக்கைச் செவ்வாய்ச் சேவல்'' (naṟṟiṇai, 272-1);
""சிறுவெண் காக்கைச் செவ்வாய்ப் பெருந்தோடு'' (kuṟuntokai, 334-1)

The commentators have taken வாய் to mean beak and have given the meaning as "கருமணி போன்றவாய்'' (beak as black as sapphire). As crows have the good quality of eating anything in the company of their flock it is here mentioned as, "பெருங்கிளை;
""காக்கை கரவாகரைந்துண்ணும் ஆக்கமும், அன்னநீரார்க்கே உள''
(Kuṟal, 527)

எயினர் குறும்பிற்கு ஊக்கம் மறவர் - can be interpreted in this way also; the warriors who start with zeal to capture the fort belonging to hunters

அரும்பொருள் எய்துக: By this the friend suggested that there might be obstacles to acquiring wealth.

தளிர் அன்ன தாங்கரு மதுகையள், மெல்லியள், இளையள், நனிபேரன்பினள் - are the attributes of talaivi. We can supply இவள் and give all the four as its predicates.
