NOTES

The first-three lines enumerated the dangers in the path at night when talaimakaṉ comes. The word இரவு should be added to வழங்கும், உரனும், அஞ்சுதகவுடைய.

The sound of the waterfall is compared to the music played on muḻavu and the humming of the bees to the music of the strings of yāḻ.

There are two requests of the friend; one is that he should stop coming at night; if he comes he must sound his horn after reaching his village to hint his safe arrival there.

The word ஒன்று should be added along with வாரல்(9) and with ஊதல் வேண்டும்(13).

The path in which talaimakaṉ comes at night is beset with dangers, and if he comes with proposals of marriage, the relations of talaivi would welcome him;

so the friend requested him not to come at night from that day onwards. If he persisted in coming, she informed him about the mental agony they would be undergoing, by asking him to sound his horn when he reached his village safe, to relieve them of the mental agony.

The annotators have the 11th lines as எற்கண்டு பெயரும் காலை. but nacciṉārkkiniyar has quoted this line in the commentary on the 15th cūtram in tokaimarapu, eluttatikāram, tolkāppiyam, (TE157n) with the reading "எக்கண்டு பெயரும் காலை! He says that "எங்கண்டு' becomes, according to canti, "எக்கண்டு'! This is the correct reading.
