TRANSLATION
- Companion (3)!
- You say (3),
- `Having faded and suffered like the withered crops in the fields which are dried up in times of failure of rain (1),
- we will keep quiet a little (3)
- having thought often about the one who parted from us, to increase our distress, and undergoing on account of that (2),
- The dancers having a large number of relations (23)
- live upon the small presents donated by rich people without concealing anything (4)
- and enjoying them without any break and not caring to save for the future lead a life without any hindrance; (5)
- they cannot claim any one place as their own native place (8);
- travel in a cart which is covered by a special kind of mat (7)
- which like the opened mouth of the crocodile which lives in water (6),
- and makes a sound. Having removed the suffering caused by travelling in the desert
by staying under the shade of the tree (9)
- and having played the drum called Kiṇai (கிணை) which produces a clear and sweet sound (10),
- and adorning the heads of male member with the chaplets made of dense flowers of yarcum (எருக்கம்) of globular bunches. (11)
- which are pleasing to look at (10),
- the garlands of shining flowers of tanner's senna (ஆவிரை) growing in the forest (14)
- to wave in the big breasts in the chest of the beautiful womenfolk among them (15),
- to be seen in the light of the roaring fire that rose in the jungle (13),
- they play upon the small and large flutes made of bamboo (17)
- whose music resembles the breathing of the female elephant walking close to its male and of the male elephant (16)
- to the accompaniment of (முழுவு) (17)

- like the sound of the toad (19)
- which makes noise in the water when the sable clouds thunder (18);

- with their small musical instruments into which a few pebbles are put to produce sound (20).

Akanāṉūṟu
The 3rd book by name nittilakkōvai

செய் denotes the crops in the field.
ஓம்புதல்
- being miserly by not giving to others and thereby saving that it would be necessary for them in future.
ஆவித்தல்
- yawning; opening the mouth for yawning.
The sound produced by the cart may be taken as being compared to the sound produced by yawning.
ஆரை: nacciṉārkkiṉiyar gives the meaning of this word
in his commentary on perumpāṇaṟṟuppaṭai 1, 50 as தொத்துளிப் பாய்.
The 7th line is found without any change as the 50th line in perumpāṇāṟṟuppati.
The word செல்லும் must be supplied and added with வாழ்க்கை (8)
The music produced by the bamboo flute is compared to the sound produced by the elephant when it breathes.
This is found in the following quotations; -
""ஓய்களிறு நோயுடை நெடுங்கை, தொகுசொற் கோடிய தூம்பின் உயிர்க்கும்'' (akam. III - 8-9);
""கண்ணிடை விடுத்த களிற்றுயிர்த் தூம்பின்'' (malaipaṭūkatām, l.6);
""கண் விடு தூம்பிற் களிற்றுயிர்'' (puṟam : 152-15.)
