TRANSLATION
- As the daytime passed away in the cool garden (5)
- in the big ghat having a grove on the sea-shore
there are birds that eat the fish (4)
- that poured from the hands of fishermen (3)
- who put the fish caught in a basket, (3)
- and who are strong in catching fish,
drawn by their nets, in the early morning (1)
- when they wandered to spread them
on the fine sand to dry (2)
- you, intending to return to your place, (5)
- ordered to yoke the horses to the chariots (6),
- arranged (7)
- the long rotund (6)
- and tight fitting bangles, (7)
- and gently rubbed the dishevelled tresses (7)
- and told my friend, "Lady, Now return to your house
with your friend" (8).
- As soon as you said this she wept bitterly (9)
- and is distressed very much (10);
- if you part and go away like a stranger (11)
- without any consideration (11)
- I am afraid that she may meet with her end (12)
- suddenly (11).
- So, if you are pleased to hear what I say (22),
- and if you and your servants come here,
not thinking that you come from a great distance (13)
- to our beautiful small village
of ever fresh sources of income and great bustle (14)

மறுகி

The commentator nacciṉārkkiṉiyar gives the meaning
for மறுகி
as திரிந்து.
Here also the fishermnen wander on the sands
to spread the fish they have caught, to dry.
Some of the fish slip from their hands in that act;
they are eaten by the birds.
எல்லை தண்பொழில் சென்றென
denotes that the union of lovers at the secretly appointed place
during day is over.
ஏ எய்
- having ordered the servants.
இளையரை ஏவி, தொடி திருத்தி, மயிர் நீவிச் சொல்லிய அளவை என முடிக்க
- Talaivaṉ arranged the bangles
which were not in proper order, and set right the tresses
which became dishevelled during union.
பிறிது ஒன்று ஆகல் பெரும்பிறிது அடைதல்;
(death) the friend was unwilling to express explicitly death;
so she hinted it by some other word.
சேணின் வருநர் போல்ப்பேணாது
means thinking yourself as old acquaintances;
it may be interpreted in this way also,
`without showing your connection with us,
as if you are coming new from a distance'
பொழுது மான்றின்று; துறையும் ஓதம் மல்கலின்
சுறவும் மாறாயின எனக்கூட்டுக குறைகூறுதல்
- humbly requesting you to stay.
ஏமுறத்தங்கி நீ நல்குதல் பெறின் என இயைத்துப்
பொருள் உரைத்தலும் ஆம்; நல்குதல்-உவத்தல்;
""நல்கினும் நல்கானாயினும்'' புறம் 80-5)
