NOTES
The elephant fought with the tiger as anger was uppermost in its mind. It may be taken in this way also;
even after fighting with the tiger, the anger of the elephant did not decrease;
this meaning is supported by the following lines in puṟam;
""வரிவயம் பொருத வயக்களிறு போல இன்னும் மாறாது சினனே'' (100-7-8)
வலி means pride; it may also mean valour.
That the pebbles shine like glow-worms suggests the brightness of the sunshine.
இருஞ்சிறை
- should be added as an epithet to எருவை.
For the verb கூஉம் the subject stag is to be supplied.
The horns that appeared first will drop down and when new ones appear in their place
they will be covered and protected by a shealth of skin.
If at that time the stag makes a loud sound the horns will shake.
For வருந்திய we have to supply the subjects, beasts, birds and trees which are found there.
Talaivaṉ reprimanded his mind in this way, "What is the use of thinking about the beauty of talaivi
after having crossed the forest and come so far?".
