NOTES
The adverbial participle அகல in line 3 will modify என்றனர் in line 14.
காடு தேர்பிணை - the female deer which searches for its stag in the forest.
ஒடுகுறங்கு - the thigh which is helpful to fleet fast.
ஏறு-எறிதல்; pouncing upon; ""கூருசிர்ப்பருத்தின் ஏறு குறித்து ஓரீஇ'' (புறம் 43-5).
The commentators have taken செவி in line 12 as an abbreviation of செவ்வி
and given the meaning accordingly. But in akam 161, line 5 ""எருவை is described as ""செஞ்செவி எருவைச் சேவல்''
in puṟam, it is described as ""கழுகொடு செஞ் செவி எருவை திரிதரும்'',
""செஞ்செவி எருவை குழீஇ'' (puṟam 370-25-26, 273-3-8)
In the old commentary on puṟam, stanza 64, line, 4, the commentator has given the meaning of eruvai
as a kind of kite whose head is white and the nest of the body is red.
The ear is mentioned in all the three quotations from akam and puṟam.
Perhaps this bird had the knack of turning its ears towards the direction where it could find its prey.
So the new travellers were keen on noticing which way it turned its ears,
to know the direction. So it would be more correct to take செவி to mean ear,
as in many quotations the ear is particularly mentioned.
