NOTES

நீர் திகழ் சிலம்பு - the mountain in which water comes out from the sub-soil
it gives out in summer the water that it received during winter.

பொன்னுடன் மணி கிளர்ப்ப - to bring to the surface precious stones along with gold. I

if by தெண்ணீர் is meant clear water then ஆலி is only a word without special manificence

reading "ஒருங்குடன் சாற்றி' the meaning is announcing the price for the three articles.

The hunter who went with the intention of hunting returns with elephant's tusk, gold, pearl, sandal wood and flowers of east indian kino-tree; by this the wealth of the mountain is hinted.

By saying that talaivaṉ is the chief of that mountain, it is hinted that he has brought many valuables things as dowry to be paid for talaivi. Instead of saying "எதிர்வான்' the friend uses the past tenses "எதிர்ந்தனன்' to denote certainty.

கொடை எதிந்தனன்: may mean this way also :- your father accepted the things that talaivaṉ offered.

By the ll. 12-15, the friend affirmed that talaivi will soon become talaivaṉ's wife. The effect of saying these things is that talaivaṉ should, on hearing this, come soon with proposals of marrriage.

There are three words in Tamiḻ having the meaning of mother யாய், ஞாய், தாய்; the first one is always used with the first person; the second, with the second person; the third, with the third person. The used of the first two words in these meanings is found in
""யாயும் ஞாயும் யாராகியரோ (Kuṟuntokai, 40-1)

The lines 12-15 can be compared with the following lines in Kuṟuntokai, 51; ""சேர்ப்பனை, யானும் காதலென் ம் நனி வெய்யள், எந்தையும் கொடீ இயர் வேண்டும், அமபல் ஊரும் அவனொடு மொழியே'' (3-6)

For the reading "ஆக்குதும்' in l.18 the meaning is `we will prepare'
