NOTES

The incident about aṉṉi miñili has been mentioned by paraṇar himself, in akam, verse 196 ll.8-12. This verse is the second time the incident is mentioned by paraṇaar, with a little more detail.

By the term green forest is meant the forest in which grass and other vegetation have grown wild after rains.

Trampling down the intertwining creepers means that the creepers and others were mixed with the soil.

பல here means many ploughs.

Some have read யாகுவினை as வரகு வினை but it does not make any sense.

வாய் மொழித் தந்தை means that the father admitted the offence and did not try to hide it.

The order of words in கண்களைந்து அருளாது should be changed into அருளாது கண்களைந்து.

For a trifle offence the Kōcar inflicted very cruel punishment of removing the eyes of the father of aṉṉi miñili. It enraged her to such an extent that her anger cooled down only when the Kocar were killed by Kuṟumpiyan titiyaṉ in battle.

Even now in villages, grazing cattle in the fields where green gram crop is cultivated during the month of மாசி (Feb. 13th to March, 13) is the custom. Lean catle will become stout. There is a proverb in Tamil that the purohits during mahālaya paksha, the temple priests during mārkaḻi, and the he-buffaloes during māci will become plumpy.
