TRANSLATION
- The bard has come as a messenger (11)
- willingly (10)
- (with this message) ``your wife is suffering from unbearable grief (10)
- because of which she weeps so that the good interior of her cool eyes
which are like the lotus of many petals become red (9)
- and is talking to her friend, ``Friend! (8)
- At this juncture of the cool winter
which arrests the swarm of bees on the creeper (6)
- of arabian jasmine which shines brightly and has unfolded buds (4)
- which is as fragrant as the tresses of the bride to be wedded (5).
- In this season that bats of black wings which are like the leather on which paste is coated
and dipped in oil (1)
- and which dwell in the very tall branches (2)
- abandon the trees in which they live during day (3),
- to make them solitary (2).

பறவை refers to the bat which leaves its abode in the evening at dusk
in search of margosa fruits and other fruits; this is supported by the following lines in Kuṟuntokai, verse 352
""நெருநீர் ஆம்பல் அடைப் புறத்தன்ன, கொடுமென் இறைய வன்னாகிர்ப்பறவை,
அகலிலைப் பலவின் சாரல் முன்னிப், பகலுறை முதுமரம் புலம்பப் போகும், சிறுபுன் மாலை''
and aiṅkuṟuniṟu. 339-1-4; ""அம்ம வாழி தோழி சிறியிலைக், குறுஞ்சினை வேம்பின் நறும்
பழம் உணீ இய, வாவல் உகக்கும் மாலையும், இன்று கொல் காதலர் சென்ற நாட்டே''

That kind of bat is called பழந்தின்னி வௌவால்: It means bats which feeds on fruits.
