• You who have a chest adorned with a garland! (14)
• In the backwater which has a big ghat (துறை) where the swift-moving shark with a sword-like bone roams about and conches seen to graze (7)
• the panicled pear (செருந்திமரம்) which puts forth buds unfolds their petals (9)
• in the morning (10)
• and the big white indian water-lily (நெய்தல் மலர்) flower which has petals very close to one another and comparable to eyes (8)
• closes those beautiful petals in the evening (10)
• and again blossom with coolness with blue nelumbo (குவளைமலர்) which spreads its fragrance of honey (11)
• On the day you parted from her (14)
• every time she saw the backwater and the foreshore garden, she was reminded about many things and suffered, detesting and thinking of many things, whether talaivaṉ would come or not (12-13)
• (In addition to that,) the mother (6)
• observed keenly her curly hairs which had grown long enough to be braided, (1)
• the yellow spots which appeared on her breasts (1-2)
• and her full grown breasts which rose with teats, so as to tear the corsets (2-3)
• and told her many times (4),
• `you are exceedingly beautiful' (4);
• and embraced her shoulders completely; and, thinking deeply for a long time (5),
• placed her under severe restraint in the house (6).

தான் ஆர் மார்ப்(14)! (தலைவா) நீ தணந்த ஞான்று(14), கழியும் கானலும் காண் டொறும்(12) வாரார் கொல் எனப்பருவரும்(13); (அதன் மேலும்) யாய்(6) கூந்தலும்(1) சுணங்கும்(2) முலையும் நோக்கி(3) "எல்லினை' எனக் கூறி(4), முயங்கி(5) அருங்கடிப் படுத்தகள்(6).
