TRANSLATION
- (My mind)! The respectable relations
and others were sumptuously fed
without discrimination with rice
and increasing ghee, which was cooked,
without anything to be desired
by mixing flesh with it (1-2).
- The omens caused by birds were auspicious (3)
- The spacious and beautiful sky
with clear brilliance was shining without any blots (3-4)
- The housee in whch marriage was celebrated
was decorated on the auspicious day when the moon
was in conjunction with cakaṭam without any defect
(சுகடம்:
the name of urōkiṇi, a star deriving
its name by its semblance of form to a chariot),
after worshipping god (4-6).
- The big war drum (முரசு)
was roaring in combination
with the drum (மணமுழவு)
suitable for marriage occasions (7)
- The ladies who bathed the bride
gazing at her without winking,
with their sharp eyes, to enjoy her beauty
quickly went away from their
(lest any evil should befall her from their looks) (8-9)
- The bride was adorned with a white string on (14)
- which the cool and fragrant buds of cynodon grass
that grew from its bulbous root

which has green blades of grass
which are comparable to sapphire cut

- which grew in abundance in the depressions
by the first fall of rain
which is accompanied by loud thunder

of sirissa having a dull exterior
(வாகைப்பூ)
of soft flowers, (10)
- She was made to appear beautiful
by being dressed in clean clothes,
and the relations thronged round her out of love (15)
- and gave her to us in the right
of the first day of marriage
in the pantal (பந்தல்)
which was noisy as sound of the clouds. (15-16)
- They dried the tiny particles
of sweat and gave her together
with the eminence born out of having adorned
her with jewels (17-18)
- Talaivi who is like a body
to my soul and who has chastity,
without the slightest trace of dislike towards me ! (19)
- "Remove slightly the saree which
is without any creases and with which you have covered
your body completely
and therefore your crescent-like forehead
is awfully perspiring, so that particless
of sweat on your forehead may be dried
by the wind blowing fast (21-22)."
- So saying I caught hold of her covering
and removed it with a loving heart;
her form came out of it and shone brilliantly
like a sword drawn out from its scabbard (23-24)
- She did not know how to hide her frame (25)
- and hid her limbs that should not be exposed,
in the darkness of her worn choice flowers
on which bees were humming (28),
- after having it was made (27).
- She was overcome with modesty suddently
and made obeisance to us, out of love (25-26)
(such a dutyful talaivi
persists in being sulky though we try
to pacify her mind by saying many things.
