TRANSLATION
- (Mother)! (One day) we together with our circle
of friends who surrounded us like a garland bathed in the sea, (6)
- built toy-houses in the sand in the fore-shore garden
and cooked food of sand and heaped it (7),
- were got tired : We were sitting there relaxing ourselves
for a little while (8-9)
- At that time one person approached us
and asked us in the following manner:-
"Young ladies with big and soft shoulders
like bamboos!
The day is losing
its brightness and getting dark.
I am very much tired. Is there any harm
if I too eat here partaking of the feast you supply
on the plate of soft leaves and stay in the little hamlet
of great bustle, instead of returning to my place (9-14)
- on seeing him (14)
- we bowed our heads
out of bashfulness (15)
- and we were together
in a place hiding ourselves (15)
- and replied
in a soft and sweet voice, (17)
- "This kind of food
is not befitting you. This is an inferior (16)
food prepared with koḻu (கொழுமீன்)
fish (17)
- Saying, (19)
- `Let us see (19)
- the ships in which long flags are waving" (18)
- we destroyed [the toy houses
and food made in the sand] with our legs (19).
- The talaivaṉ fixed his looks on me only, (21)
- among many who went away without staying there (20)
- and said, (22)
- `Lady with a beautiful forehead ! (21)
- May I go' (22)
- so as to make my heart melt (22)
- Even though I replied him, `you may go' (23)
- he did not move from there (25)
- and staring at me only, (??)
- and catching hold of the ornamental staff
in the form of a lotus in front of the seat
of the tall chariot, (24)
- stood there (??)
- Even today his standing there in that place
is always before my eyes (25) [VARIANT ?]
- Let my mother know this if she wants (1).
- Let the ladies of the street who are fond of indulging
in scandal hear this if they want too (1-2)
- Telling you plainly that there is nothing else
except this, I shall swear in a rough manner
to you by standing in the presence of the god
- that lives in the mouth of the river
which has eddying whirls (3-5)
