• Companion ! Listen to what I say. May you live long! (1)

• The maḻavar who have reddish eyes and hairs curling at the end which cover the nape of the neck (5)
• by surrounding it and resembling the twisted horns of a male ram, (4)
• hold in their hands (7)
• small arrows of great strength (5)
• from which fire is emitted (7)
• and bows (6-7)
• and put into their mouths the mud from the anthill and keep it there as medicine (6)
• to prevent cough. They seize the churning rod which separates butter from curd (8);
• go near the sheds where cows are kept (8)
• with the slippers which cover their feet, to become worn out (9);
• lift the calves with their cows in the guarded places of enemies (10);
• they remove the herd from those places in the big forest of extensive area. (11)
• (In that forest) the west wind blows whirling (14)
• in order to radiate the heat of the sun of many rays (13)
• to be severe everywhere (14)
• the sun remains like a boat in the broad and big sea of sky (12).
• (On account of that wind) the flowers in horse radish tree of shabby looking trunk, (முருங்கைமரம்) which have become very old, (15)
• drop and spread like the hails that fall in the cool rainy season (16)
• in the many mountains which have thick dew (17)
• we did nothing to our talaivar who crossed those many mountains to be hated by him (18).

தோழி! இம்மை(1) நன்று செய்மருங்கில் தீது இல் என்னும்(2) பழமொழி இன்று பொய்த்தன்று கொல்(3)? பொருங்காட்டில்(11) ஞாயிற்றின்(13) உருப்பு அவிர்பு ஊரிய(15) ஆலியின் உதிரும்(16) பன்மலை இறந்தோர்க்கு(17) யான் முனிதருபண்பு செய்தன் றோ இலம்(18).

(1) The mistress who become changed in her mind spoke to the companion (2) It may also be taken as follows: The companion spoke to the mistress.

(Note. The talaivi did not do anything to displease talaivaṉ. Yet he was postponing coming with proposals of marriage and was causing ditress to talaivi. So she had cause to doubt the wisdom of that proverb)
