NOTES

When Ramaṉ went to battle with Rāvaṇaṉ, he held a confidential meeting with his army under a banyan tree at Kōtī which is now known as tiruvaṇaikkarai (திருவணைக்கரை), situated in Pāṇṭiyaṉ's country. The birds living in that banyan tree made such a loud noise that one could not hear what the other said. Rāmaṉ commanded them to be silent. The noise stopped completely. That banyan tree is compared to the erstwhile noisy village. This is what is found in the old gloss.
