TRANSLATION
- Oh! bard! When the sea completely stops
its roaring and becomes silent and when boats
are not put to sea (1)
- then the shark and other fish
roam about arrogant,
- in the dark backwater of great depth. (2)
- The mouth of cruel ladies spread words of scandal. (3)
- Even at those times the chief of the cool maritime tract
used to visit us frequently (6)
- (not to be speak of nights) when his tall chariot
of beautiful (ornamentations) (4)
- used to stay for a long time, without parting from us
in daytime too, formerly (5).
- It has gone (6)
- Now, the talaivaṉ who is without that rare love
that he had during clandestine love
(களவு)
to have union with us, (7)
- has completely stopped coming, (8)
- crossing over from the place to which he has gone. (7)
- Without thinking how he is related to us, (8)
- the talaivi with a bright forehead (14)
- conceals her unbearableness from being known
to others with her eyes filled with tears, (13)
- by telling to herself, (12)
- `My mind! At night (10)
- in the palmyra tree adjoining our house
the anṟil-s (அன்றில்கள்)
of bending beaks (which are united), (11)
- do not sleep
even if one of them is separated, for a little while,
from the other. (12)
- If you go to the ancient place of fertility,
without being seen by anyone (9)
- and tell the talaivaṉ,
`What shall I do (for the sleeplessness of aṉṟils?') (14)
what harm is there? (10)
