TRANSLATION
- Mother! May you live long. Mother! Hear attentively what I say (1)
- you question me that your daughter
is full of distress and does not drink even milk
and has turned very much sallow through lovesickness (2-3)
- I too do not clearly know how it came about (3-4)
- One day we went to the mountain slopes
abundant with flowers with our friends thriging branches (4-6).
- We cried aloud "puli, puli' (7)
- (On hearing this, a talaivaṉ), who wore a circular garland
of bright red indian water lily flowers
resembling the eyes of ladies,
which was strung with the help of a needle (8-9),
- had a chaplet (கண்ணி)
of scarlet ixora flowers
(வெட்சிப்பூ) on one side (10),
- had smeared red sandal paste on his chest
which was fit to be attacked by the breasts of ladies, (11)
- had a bow which was bound well and decorated;
chose a unique arrow, (12)
- appeared there, and questioned us,
`which is the way in which that tiger went? and stood there (13-14).
- On seeing him we concealed and shrank ourselves
behind each other's back sliding respectfully
to one side and stood having been abashed (14-16)
- He said, "Ladies who have five kinds of tresses which
are divided with desire, beautiful foreheads
and black tresses having oiliness!
`Will lies come even out of your mouths? (17-19)
- That talaivaṉ who is the master of that hill
controlled and slowed down gently the speed of the horses
harnessed to his chariot, went to his place after looking
at the eyes of your daughter coated with collyrium
many times, after she looked at him, and stopped it. (19-22)
- At the time the day was drawing to its end
and the sun went down to disappear.
Your daughter looked at the direction
in which he disappeared and exclaimed,
"Truly he is a valourous young man, friend!
To those who have the strength of knowledge
there is scope for a principle to that extent!

(Note: Crying `puli, puli' is the superstitious belief of mountain dwellers who think that by so crying the east indian kino tree will lower its branches for them to pluck flowers, easily. That is why the talaivaṉ questioned about a real tiger Cf. 52-2
Line 18 மை ஈரோதி does not convey any meanings is it is preceded by ஐவகை வகுத்த கூந்தல்
Line 12: விரிவில் also means a bow that has several bands on it to make it strong.
