AKAM 021
(21) pālai
- Lines 1-5. The beauty of the talaivi
- (5-9) speaking to the heart
- (10-27) Description of the forest
Translation
- Our talaivi has white teeth which resemble
the buds of uniform shape placed in a row
from among the buds of arabian jasmine
(மௌவல்)
which is very much desired
by bees and which spreads on the young chaste tree
in the house garden, a beautiful stomach,
a broad waist (அல்குல்),
soft tresses that fall low (on the nape)
having been adorned, and big soft shoulders
like the bamboo
(1-5)
- Even when I said, "In order to make
her glorious beauty perish, do not go
to distant country" you did not agree to that.
If you are desirous of funness and serious about it,
we shall bring wealth of many kinds
to make our talaivi
(தலைவி)
feel happy
(5-8)
- My mind! may you live long!"
Start, quickly now itself
(8-9).
- In the villages of small places
where the suns heat stays permanently
the fragrant South wind shakes
the common cadamba
(மராஅம்)
tree and dashes against it
so as to make all its flowers to drop down
(11-12)
- just like the branches from which
one who is good at gathering flowers beats them
with a stick so that the beautiful branches
which blossom slowly
the bunches which have petals spiralling clock-wise
stand bereft of flowers,
and scatters them to shower into the curly hairs
of soldiers who pass through the desert
(9-14).
- The green-eyed male of the brown coloured dog
attacks the boar as the weak female of the dog
which had recently given birth to pups
and is under confinement, feels hungry,
in the big caves of the mountain
which has tooth brush
(ஓமைமரம்)
trees of scattered tops
in which the common female kite
is under confinement having laid its eggs
(16-18).
- On seeing (the boar being attacked),
the feeling female rubs against the date-palm
(19).
- It drops its red fruits from its green bunches,
having been cut
(21).
- The hard nuts of the date mixes with the hard soil
of the high level mound of mud
(21).
- The shepherds who drink porridge
(கூழ்)
dig the soil with the help of pick-axe
of strong edge
(22)
- As no water issues from the well
they abandon it and cover it by dry leaves
(23)
- The merciless hunters who are desirous
of the white tusks of elephants
(24)
- which roam about negligently in the ways,
thinking that there is no danger to them,
mistaking those wells to be such pits
that were dug to catch them
the rows of herds of big elephants
fill them up in the forest
where paths with big boulders transverse
(25-27).
- Rise now to go to that forest
and come quickly following me
(9, 27).
