(19) pālai
- Lines (1-8) The hero addressing his mind.
- Line (9) Requesting the mind not to forget him
- (10-19) The state of the lady-love during separation.
Translation
- My mind! May you live long!
You did not stay at that place on that day
when we started, saying to me,
I won't come'.
Having come so far as this place
you have suffered
(1-2);
- you have not crossed the high
and big mountains in which there are rock horned-owls
of dreadful voice, which make a sound,
like the sound of the small drum
(துடி)
inside which the beatings tick revolves;
The meaning can be clearly understood
in those broad places where the yā trees
have grown tall. Perched on those trees
the common kite makes a sound several times
to make travellers suffer
(2-6)
- If you thought of staying behind, prosper
(6-8)
- The cool lids of the eyes
which were formerly comparable
to the black petals of blue nelumbo
(குவளை) flower
and were moist with tears
have now become like the red petals of the arnotto
(நறவு) flower
(9-11).
- As her heart is boiling every time
she thinks of me, the tears dry up
(12)
- The bright and hot drops of tear
which used to pour down quickly
now trickle down intermittingly
hinting thereby the sorrow of the talaimakaḷ
(13-14)
- She fears being seen by others
in that state and moves from her place slowly,
and her soft wrist having joints
lose their beauty and looks like the creeper
that has dropped all its flowers
as the few bangles that were still remaining
had also fallen
(14-16)
- our dear one is sitting
in a particular place as she has no strength
to move anywhere, having as a companion
the flame of the lamp with the beautiful
hollow container made of thin flat plate of metal
(17-18)
- After embracing the lean nape
of beloved wife which is suffering
on account of sorrow
(19),
- refrain from forgetting us
(9)
The talaimakkaṉ who parted having made up
his mind to acquire wealth reprimanded his mind
which thought of talavi desired the beauty
(variant reading : The talaivaṉ who parted
to acquire wealth spoke to his mind
in the middle of the desert)
