AKAM 000:
Akanāṉūṟu, Invocation of God
Translation
- The antaṇaṉ has a neck like sapphire
from which is produced the music of yaḻ (Sāma vēda) (15).
- Everyone including amarar
(அமரர்)
who do not know old age
and muṉivar (முனிவர்) ,
and others (12)
- could not know his very old nature (13).
- He is wearing round his waist (as a cloth)
the skin of a strong tiger which has stripes on it (14).
- He has a garland
(தார்)
made of fresh and golden laburnum
(கொன்றை) flowers
which blossom in winter,
and another garland
(மாலை)
and chaplet worn on the head (of the same flower) (1-2).
- In his chest lies the fine sacred thread
which is spotlessly clean (3).
- In his forehead there is the eye
that does not wink (4)
- In his hand he has an axe which kills enemies,
in addition to a battle-axe
(கணிச்சி) (4-5).
- The one who does not know defeat
has also a three-forked lance (5-6).
- He rides on a bull.
Umai (உமை)
resides in him (7).
- He has a form resembling the red sky
and has sharp, curved, white and shining teeth
like the crescent moon that appears in the red sky (8-10).
- He has on his head matted locks of hairs
which resembles fire that has branches,
with the crescent which has not attained
its full form, shining brightly (10-11).
- The world stays in the shelter (protection)
of his feet which are indestructible (16)
pāratam pāṭiya peruntēvaṉār
(Note) Tār is worn on special occasions,
mālai worn for beauty; Kaṇṇi is worn when fighting.
Some others interpret them as follows:
Tār is joining together of flowers;
mālai is made by knitting them.
Kaṇṇi is made with a single flower

கண்ணியன் (2); மார்பின: துருண் (3); நுதலது நாட்டம் (4);
கையது கணிச்சியொடு மழுவே (5); வேலும் உண்டு (6); ஊர்ந்தது ஏறு (7);
சேர்ந்தோன் உமை (7) அவன் தான் நிழல் உலகு தவிர்ந்தன்று (16).
