This poem is called `tirukataikkāppu' according to caivaite tradition. This stanza contains the author's name, his birth place and the gotra in which he is born, and the benefits accruing to one who sings the stanzas with intense devotion. The three things distinguish Ñāṉacampantar's tēvāram (1) The anecdote about Rāvaṇaṉ (2) Brahma and Vishnu trying to find out the feet and head of Civaṉ who appeared between them as a pillar of fire. (3) Reference to Jains and Buddhists. In a very few patikams this arrangement is not found.


1. kaṟṟāṅku _eri _ōmpi,
Having maintained the fires according to the lore of the vedas which they learnt.
kaliyai vārāmē ceṟṟār vāḻ tillaic
in tillai where brahmins who have destroyed the evil effects of Kaliyukam (poverty) live
ciṟṟampalam mēya muṟṟā veṇtiṅkaḷ mutalvaṉ pātamē
the feet of the primordial one who adorns his head with the crescent of the third phase and who resides with desire in ciṟṟampalam, to the exclusion of other things.
paṟṟā niṉṟāraip paṟṟā, pāvamē.
sins will not adhere to people who have caught hold of (those feet).

2.paṟappaip paṭuttu, [* _eṅkum *] pacu vēṭṭu,
Having constructed a dais in the form of Karutaṉ (or Kite) for sacrificial fire and offered an animal in sacrifice.
_eri _ōmpum ciṟappar vāḻ tillaic
in Tillai where eminent brahmins who maintain the fires.
ciṟṟampalam mēya piṟappu_il perumāṉai,
the great one who is not born and who resides with desire in ciṟṟampalam.
piṉ tāḻcaṭaiyāṉai,
one who has matted locks flowing on the nape.
maṟappu_ilār kaṇṭīr, maiyal tīrvārē.
only those who do not forget him will be free from mental delusion:

3.mai _ār _oṇ kaṇṇār māṭa[*m*] neṭuvītik kaiyāl pantu _ōccum kaḻi cūḻ tillaiyuḷ,
inside Tillai which is surrounded by backwater and where in the long streets of storeys the girls of bright and colliriyum-coated eyes play balls with their hands.
poyyā maṟai pāṭal purintāṉ,
one who sang the maṟai which never becomes untrue.
_ulaku _ēttac
to be worshipped by the people of this world.
ceyyāṉ, _uṟai kōyil ciṟṟampalamtāṉē.
ciṟṟampalam is the eminent temple where the red-coloured one resides.

4.niṟai veṇkoṭi māṭa neṟṟi nēr tīṇṭap
the group of white flags touch the facade of the storeys straight.
piṟai vantu _iṟai tākkum pērampalam,
the sacred hall where the crescent moon comes and strikes against the Caves.
tillaic ciṟaivaṇṭu _aṟai _ōvāc ciṟṟampalam, mēya _iṟaivaṉ
the lord who resides in the ciṟṟampalam of tillai where the winged bees hum without cessing.
kaḻal _ēttum _iṉpam _iṉpamē.
the pleasure derived by praising his feet is the real pleasure.

5.celva neṭumāṭam ceṉṟu cēṇ _ōṅkic
the tall storeys having wealth are high and rise into the sky.
celva mati tōya, celvam _uyarkiṉṟa,
the petted crescent touches it and the wealth is always increasing.
celvar vāḻ tillaic ciṟṟampalam mēya celvaṉ
the lord who resides in the ciṟṟampalam of tillai where people who possess the wealth of devotion reside.
kaḻal _ēttum celvam celvamē.
the wealth one gets by praising the feet of the lord is the real wealth.

6.varu māntaḷir mēṉi mātu _ōrpākam _ām
Having on one part a lady who has the complexion of the mango-leaves that are just aprouting.
tiru mān tillaiyuḷ, ciṟṟampalam mēya
who is residing in ciṟṟampalam in tillai which is great by its wealth.
karumāṉ_uri-_āṭaik kaṟai cēr kaṇṭattu _em perumāṉ
our great one who has a blue neck and clothing of skin of spotted dear (elephant)
kaḻal_allāl pēṇātu, _uḷḷamē.
my mind will not desire worshipping the feet of others except the feet of the lord at ciṟṟampalam.

7._alai _ār puṉal cūṭi,
Having borne on the head the water (of the kankai) which is full of waves.
_ulaku _ēttac [[A2]]
_ākattu _orupākam malaiyāṉmakaḷōṭum makiḻntāṉ, [[A1]]
he rejoiced having on one part of his form the daughter of the king of mountains, to be praised by the world.
cilaiyāl _eyil _eytāṉ,
He discharged arrow at the fortress with his bow.
ciṟṟampalamtaṉṉait talaiyāl vaṇaṅkuvār talai_āṉār[*kaḷē*].
those who bow with their heads his ciṟṟampalam would be considered foremost.

8.kūrvāḷ _arakkaṉtaṉ valiyaik kuṟaivittu,
Having caused to decrease the strength of arakkaṉ (rāvaṇaṉ) who had a sharp sword.
cīrālē malku ciṟṟampalam mēya nīr _ār caṭaiyāṉai
one who has on his matted locks water and is residing in ciṟṟampalam which has ever-increasing fame.
nittal _ēttuvār
those who praise that daily.
tīrā nōy_ellām tīrtal tiṇṇamē.
It is definite that all their incurable diseases would be cured.

9.kōḷ nāka(_a)ṇaiyāṉum kuḷirtāmaraiyāṉum[[B1]]
kaḻal _ētta,[[B3]]
kāṇār[[B2]]
The one who is sleeping on the bed of a killing serpent and one who is seated on a cool lotus could not see the feet to praise them.
kaṉal_āy _ōṅkiṉāṉ,
who rose like a column of fire.
cēṇār vāḻ tillaic ciṟṟampalam _ētta,
when we praise the ciṟṟampalam in tillai where the residents of the upper world live.
māṇā nōy_ellām vāḷā māyum [*ē*].
all the inglorious diseases will vanish without any effort.

10.paṭṭait tuvar_āṭai, paṭimam, koṇṭāṭum muṭṭaik kaṭṭurai moḻiva kēḷātu [*ē*],
without listening to the fabricated falsehood which is as blunt as the egg, spoken by those who pride on their ascetic austerities and who wear a cloth soaked in ochre of the bark of maruta maram (myrobalam)
[muṭṭai: if this is taken as an expansion of muṭai then the meaning will be offensive odour.]
ciṭṭar vāḻ tillaic ciṟṟampalam mēya naṭṭapperumāṉai nāḷum toḻuvōm [*ē*].
we will worship with our hands daily the dancing lord who is residing in ciṟṟampalam desiring it, in tillai where learned men well-versed in vedic lore live.

11.cīlattār koḷkaic ciṟṟampalam mēya cūlappaṭaiyāṉaic [[C2]]
about the one who has the trident weapon and who resides in ciṟṟampalam which is meditated upon by people of good conduct.
ñālattu _uyar kāḻi ñāṉacampantaṉ [[C1]]
Ñaṉacampantaṉ who was born in Kāḻi which is famous in this world.
coṉṉa tamiḻmālai
the garland of tamil verses sung by him.
kōlattāl pāṭa vallār nallārē.
those who are able to sing in the proper manner beautifully are definitely good people.
