Civaṉ in Tiruvārūr!
ஆளாய் இருக்கும் அடியார்
the humble servants who do not swerve from that state.
பிறரை வேண்டாத
without desiring any one except yourself.
மீளா அடிமை உமக்கே ஆளாய்
being the ever humble servants to you only always without any chance of redemption.
மூளாத்தீப்போல் உள்ளே கனன்று
burning internally like the fire that is smouldering without visible flame, and not wishing to reveal their distress.
முகத்தால் மிக வாடி
pining away so that the sufferings can be patent on the face to be known to others.
தங்கள் அல்லல் (2) சொன்னக்கால்
if they express their distress in so many words.
வாளாங்கு இருப்பீர்
you are quite indifferent to that.
வாழ்ந்து போதீரே
Let you prosper though devotees might suffer troubles.

you have the absolute right to sell me outright.
ஒற்றி அல்லேல்
I am not a thing mortgaged with right of possession

விரும்பி ஆட்பட்டேன
I become your servant wishing it.
குற்றம் ஒன்றும் செய்தது இல்லை
I have not committed any fault.
கொத்தை ஆக்கினீர்
you made be blind

எற்றுக்கு என்கண் கொண்டீர்
for what reason did you take away my eyesight?
நீரே பழிப்பட்டீர்
you yourself got the blame, not I.
மற்றைக்கண் தாராது ஒழிந்தால்
(after much request and prayer you granted me sight of my left eye in Kāñcipuram) if you do not grant me the sight of the other eye, which is the right one.

{$} அன்றில் முட்டாது அடையும் சோலை ஆரூர் அகத்தீரே
Civaṉ dwelling in Ārūr which has gardens which the birds, aṉṟil, reach without losing their way!
கன்றுமுட்டி உண்ணச்சுரந்த காலியவை போல
like the calves that drink the milk when they hit against the udder to secrete milk.
என்றும் முட்டாப்பாடும் அடியார்
the devotees who always sing about you without any deficiency, and receive benefits from you.
தம் கண் காணாது
having lost the power of eyesight.
குன்றில் முட்டி
if they hit against a hill.
குழியில் வீழ்ந்தால்
and suffer falling into a pit.
வாழ்ந்து போதீரே

{$} இருக்கை திருவாரூரே உடையீர்
Lord who has as his permanent residence tiruvārūr!
துருத்தி உறைவீர்
you dwell in turutti (modern Kuttālam in Tanjavūr Dist.)
பழனம்பதியாச் சோற்றுத்துறை ஆள்வீர்
you rule in cōṟṟuttuṟai having paḻaṉam as your place.
மனமே என (1) வேண்டா
we need not say that your dwelling place is the minds of devotees
[[வேண்டா: என்னதூஉம் பரியல் வேண்டா (puṟam, 172-4-5).]]
[[PP: வேண்டா என்பது வினைமேல் நின்றதொரு முற்றுச்சொல்; now it is used in the form of வேண்டாம்)
அருத்திஉடைய அடியார்தங்கள் அல்லல் (2) சொன்னக்கால்
if your humble servants who have love towards you and complain about their sufferings.
வருத்திவைத்து மறுமைப்பணித்தால்
if you make them undergo sufferings in this birth and do good only in the next birth.

செந்தண் பவளம் திகழும் சோலைத் திருவாரூர் (1) இதுவோ
is this place tiruvarūr which has gardens where fertile and cool tender leaves are glittering like coral?
இதுவே ஆமாறு உமக்கு ஆட்பட்டார்க்கு
is this the fate of being your humble servants?
சந்தம்பலவும் பாடும் அடியார் தம் கண் காணாது
your humble servants who compose verses of rhythmic movement having lost their eyesight.
வந்து
coming to you.
எம்பெருமான் முறையோ என்றால்
if they make a humble petition to you wanting justice to be done.

{$} தினைத்தாள் அன்ன செங்கால் நாரை சேரும் திருவாரூர்ப் புனைத்து ஆர்கொன்றைப் பொன்போல் (1) மாலைப் புரிபுன்சடையீரே
Lord who has a twisted ruddy caṭai on which is worn a koṉṟai garland which is golden in colour and grows in the forest tract, and who dwells in Tiruvārūr which is reached by the cranes which have legs like the stem of the millet

your humble servants.
தனத்தால் இன்றி
suffering not only from want of riches.
தாம்தாம் மெலிந்து

but also having lost their eyesight.
மனத்தால் வாடி இருந்தால்
if they are languishing in their minds.

Lord Civaṉ who is in ārūr having gardens where flocks of male and female birds reach their nests!
ஏய் எம்பெருமான்
our Lord who is suitable to us.
உமக்கு ஆட்பட்டோர்க்கு இதுவே ஆமாறு
is this the fate for those who have become your slaves?
மறவா மனம் காட்டி
granting me a mind that does not forget you.
மாயம் காட்டி
having practised deception in my case.
பிறவிகாட்டி
making me to be born in this world.
காயம் காட்டி
and endowing me with a body.
கண்நீர் கொண்டால்
if you take away my eye-sight.
வாழ்ந்து போதீரே

{$} இழியாக்குலத்தில் பிறந்தோம்
we were born in high caste.
உம்மை இகழாது
without despising you.
கழியாய், கடலாய், கலனாய், நிலனாய்க் (1) கலந்த சொல்லாகி ஏத்துவோம்
we shall praise you possessing words which mention your pervading backwater, ocean, ship and earth.
அடிகேள்
our god!
பழிதான் ஆவது அறியீர்
you are not conscious of the reproach that comes to you by making us suffer.
பாடும் பத்தரோம்
we who are the pious people singing you praises.
வழிதான் காணாது
unable to see the way.
(2) அலமந்திருந்தால்
if we are agitated in mind.

The Lord who is in tiruvārūr!
காய்தான் வேண்டின் கனிதான் அன்றோ கருதிக் கொண்டக்கால்
if what one desires to have though it is unripe fruit is equal to ripe fruit if one possesses it wishing it.
பிறர் எல்லாம்
all others except you.
(1) பேயோடேனும் பிரிவுஒன்று இன்னாது என்பர்
say that separation from a pēy with which we developped friendship is a thing that brings sufferings;

you keep mum and do not speak even a single word, opening your mouth, though we who have become your slaves, are roaming in the midst of your audience-hall, complaining like a vile dog.

you who had as your fitting abode tirumūlaṭṭaṉam.
செருந்தி செம்பொன் மலரும் சோலைத் திருவாரூர் இருவோ
is this tiruvārūr where the tree cerunti blossoms like superior gold in the gardens?
[[PP: பொன் இயன்ற தட்டு அலர்ந்த பூஞ்செருந்தி (campantar, caikkāṭu (2) 4, and its parallel quotations]]
இருந்தும் நின்றும் கிடந்தும் உம்மை இகழாது ஏத்துவோம்
we will praise you without slighting whether we are sitting, or standing or lying;

being the many arts.
கார் ஊர் கண்டத்து எண்தோள் முக்கண் (1) ஆரூர்த்திருமூலட்டானத்தே(2) வார் ஊர்முலையாள் பாகம் கொண்டீர்(4)
Lord who has as a half a lady who wears a bodice on her breasts, and who has a black neck, eight shoulders three eyes and dwells in ārūr mūlaṭṭāṉam!
பார் ஊர் அறிய
to be known in all the places in this world.
அடிப்பேர் ஆரூரன் என் கண்கொண்டீர்
you took away the eye-sight of mine who has the name of ārūraṉ which is the names of your holy feet.
நீரே பழிப்பட்டீர்
you get the blame.
வாழ்ந்து போதீர்
