My father and master who dwells in Iṭaimarutu!
கழுதை குங்குமம் தான் சுமந்து எய்த்தால்
if the donkey becomes weary after carrying loads of saffron.
பாழ் புகக் கைப்பர்
people will drive it to graze in a barren land

I was caught in the big vortex of worldly life, being unsteady in my mind, wandering in doing fruitless acts, like that donkey.
எந்தாய்
my father!
மனனே
my mind!
அழுது நீ இருந்து என் செய்தி
what can you do by weeping!
அங்கணா, அரனே எனமாட்டா இழுதையேனுக்கு ஓர்உய்வகை அருளாய்
grant me a device to redeem myself who is so much ignorant and not capable of uttering the names, one who has beautiful eyes, Araṉ:

நரைப்பு மூப்பொடு பிணிவரும் (1) இன்னே
getting grey hairs, old age, and diseases will come now itself;
[[நரைப்பு: see 10th verse]]
நன்றிஇல் வினையே துணிந்து எய்த்தேன்
I become weary having decided to commit only acts which do not bear any good.
அரைத்த மஞ்சள் அது ஆவதை அறிந்தேன்
I came to know that this body will lose its beauty like the turmeric pulverized into a fine paste.
அஞ்சினேன் நமனார்(அவர்) தம்மை
I was afraid of the god of death.
உன்சேவடி சேர உரைப்பன் நான்
I now pray to you to reach your feet.
உணரும் வாழ்க்கையை ஒன்று அறியாத இரைப்பனேனுக்கு ஓர்உய்வகை அருளாய்
please grant me a device to redeem myself who has delution of mind which prevents me from discerning the truth, and not knowing even a little to lead a life of useful activities.

வாழ்க்கை புல்நுனைப்பனி வெங்கதிர் கண்டாற் போலும்
human life is as transient as the drop of dew on the tip of the grass which vanishes when the sun shines.
பொருள் இலை
there is no substance in that.

நாளும் இற்றைக்கு நாளை என்று இடர் உற்றனன்
I was disappointed thinking everyday, I shall be happier tomorrow, than I am today.

what is there to happen to me?
முன்னமே உனசேவடிசேராமூர்க்கனாகிக் கழிந்தன காலம்
all the years elapsed, myself being arrogant and obstinate, without approaching your feet early in my life.
இன்னம் என்தனக்கு உய்வகை அருளாய்
please grant me a device to redeem myself, at least now.

அந்தி வெண்பிறைசூடும் எம்மானே
our master who wears the white crescent that rises at sunset!
முந்திச் செய்வினை இம்மைக்கண் நலிய
the actions done in previous births to cause distress in this birth.
மூர்க்கன் ஆகிக்காலம் கழிந்தன
as I am under their influence all the years elapsed, myself being arrogant and obstinate.
(1) சிந்தித்தே மனம் வைக்கவும் மாட்டேன்
I am unable to even to fix you in my mind, discerning between good and bad, and renouncing attachments towards worldly things.
சிறுச்சிறிது இரப்பார்கட்கு ஒன்று ஈயேன்
I won't give even a small amount to supplicants.
ஆரூர் மேவிய அமரர்கள் தலைவா
the chief of the immortals and who dwells in Ārūr!

அழிப்பர் ஐவர் புரவு உடையார்கள்
the five senses which should usually protect me destroy all that is good.
ஐவரும் புரவு ஆசு அற ஆண்டு கழித்து
those five senses have held sway over me to their full satisfaction and having abandoned me
[[ஐவர் the five senses are spoken as denoting personal class of beings, out of anger)
கால் பெய்து போயின பின்னை
after they had gone placing me under their feet.
கடைமுறை உனக்கே பொறை ஆனேன்
at last I become a burden to you only.
மெய்ப்பொருள் தன்னை விழித்துக்கண்டனன்
I regained my knowledge viewed things rightly and came to know the real truth.
மானுடவாழ்க்கை ஈது ஆகில் வேண்டேன்
if this is the nature of human life I will not desire it

I realised that it was low.
என் தனக்கு உய்வகை அருளாய்

குற்றம் தன்னொடு குணம் பல பெருக்கி
doing many acts that can bring blemish and many good things.
கோலம் நுண் இடையாரொடு மயக்கி
being confused in mind in the company of women who have beautiful small waists.
கற்றிலேன் கலைகள் பலஞானம்
I did not learn many arts and theological treatises.
கடிய ஆயினகொடுமைகள் செய்தேன்
I committed cruel acts which people view with dread.
பற்றல் ஆவது ஓர் பற்று மற்று இல்லேன்
I have no support which I can catch hold of.
பாவியேன் பல பாவங்கள் செய்தேன்
myself being already a sinner I committed many sinful acts.
எற்று உளேன்
to what purpose should I live?
எனக்கு உய்வகை அருளாய்
please grant me a device to redeem myself.

குற்றம் செற்றம் இவை முதலாகக் கொடுக்க கிற்றிலேன் ஒண்பொருள் தன்னை
I have not the will to give wealth which will bring me fame, miserliness and enmity being the reasons for that.
வேட்கையும் சினமும் விடுக்ககிற்றிலேன்
I do not have the strength of will to give up desires and anger.
வேண்டில் ஐம்புலன் என் வசம் அல்ல
if I wish to give up the desires of the five sensory organs they are not under my control.
நடுக்கம் உற்றது ஓர் மூப்பு வந்து (1) எய்த
as the oldage has come which is the cause of trembling.
நமன்தமர் தரகத்து இடல் அஞ்சி
being afraid of throwing me into the hell by the servants of the god of death.
இடுக்கண் உற்றனன்
I suffered mentally
உய்வகை அருளாய்

one has the colour of fire!
எரியாடீ
one who dances in the fire at the end of the world!
ஐவகை அரையர்அவர் ஆகி
the five different sensory organs having established themselves as rulers.
ஆட்சிகொண்டு
they have control over me
ஒருகால் அவர் நீங்கார்
they will never leave me alone.
அவ்வகை அவர் வேண்டுவது ஆனால்
if they want to rule over me according to their particular whims.
அவர் அவர் வழி ஒழுகி நான் வந்து செய்வகை அறியேன்
I do not know what is to be done, having acted following their commands.
எவ்வகை எனக்கு உய்வகை
what is the means of redemption for me?
அருளாய்
please grant me that.

ஏழைமானுட இன்பினை நோக்கி
looking at the joy of human life which is full of ignorance.
இளையவர் வலைப்பட்டிருந்து இன்னம் வாழைதான் பழுக்கும் நமக்கு என்று
thinking like people who think that the plaintain tree which once bore fruits will again bear fruits, the young women who gave us pleasure will always be young and give us pleasure, and being caught in the net of infatuation.
வஞ்சவல்வினையுள் வலைப்பட்டு
and caught in the net of the deceptive and irresistible Karmams.
கூழை மாந்தர் தம் செல்கதிப்பக்கம்
having gone in the way of people who are deficient in knowledge
போகமும் பொருள் ஒன்று(உம்) அறியாத ஏழையேனுக்கு ஓர் உய்வகை அருளாய்
please grant me a device to redeem myself who does not possess the nature of knowledge and the nature of things that are understood by it

{$} அரைக்கும் சந்தனத்தோடு அகில் உந்தி ஐவனம் சுமந்து ஆர்த்து இருபாலும் இரைக்கும் காவிரித் தென்கரை தன்மேல் இடைமருது உறை எந்தை பிரானை
on the master and our father who dwells in Iṭaimarutu on the southern bank of the Kāviri which produces a sound on both the banks, carrying mountain paddy, and roaring and pushing in abundance eagle-wood along with sandal wood along with sandal wood which is useful for grinding to make a paste.
உரைக்கும் ஊரன் ஒளிதிகழ் மாலை உள்ளத்தால் உகந்துஏத்த வல்லார்கள்
those who are able to praise with joy in their hearts, with the help of the shining garlands of verses composed by Ūraṉ who always praises Civaṉ.
நரைப்பு மூப்பொடு நடலையும் இன்றி
without getting grey hairs, old age and undergoing distress.
நாதன்சேவடி நண்ணுவர்தாமே
will reach the red lotus feet of the master, there is no doubt about it.
