கால பாசம் பிடித்து எழு தூதுவர்
the servants of the god of death who carry in their hands a noose and start for snatching away lives.
பாலகர் விருத்தர் பழையார் எனார்
would not have any consideration and will not leave that they are children, old men and people with a long record of having practised good actions

ஆல நீழல் அமர்ந்த வாட்போக்கியார் சீலம் ஆர்ந்தவர் (1) செம்மையுள் நிற்பரே
those who have enjoyed the nature of the god in Vāṭpōkki who sat under the shade of a banyan tree, and follow the right conduct, will not be afraid of them, and attain bliss.

oh sinners!
(1) விடுத்த தூதுவர் வந்து வினைக் குழிப் படுத்த போது பயன் இலை
if you cry aloud when the messengers sent by the god of death push you to sink into the hold of hell it will be of no avail
அடுத்த கின்னரம் கேட்கும் வாட்போக்கியை எடுத்தும் ஏத்தியும் இன்புறுமின்களே
feel joy by praising highly vāṭpōkki where the music of Kiṉṉaram which lives there, can be heard

தம் தம் கின்னரம் தொடுகிலோம் என்றனரே (periyāḻvar tirumoḻi, 3-6-5);

இவ்வாறு வந்து வளைத்து எழுதூதுவர் உந்தி ஓடி நரகத்து இடா முனம்
Before people are not placed in the hell running and pushing, by the messengers of the god of death who surround them coming to their place, and start on their journey
அந்தியின் ஒளி தாங்கும் வாட்போக்கியார்
the Lord in vāṭpōkki who has the red colour at sunset.
சிந்தியா எழுவார் வினை தீர்ப்பரே
will remove the Karmams of those who wake up from sleep thinking of him

கூற்றம் வந்து குமைத்திடும் போதினால்
at that time when the god of death comes and annoys you
தேற்றம் வந்து தெளிவுறல் ஆகுமே
is it possible to get clarity of mind and decide that all you knew up to this day was useless, and the feet of the Lord was the only truth?
ஆற்றவும் அருள் செய்யும் வாட்போக்கிபால், இருள் நீங்க விளக்கை ஏற்றுமின்
light the lamp of wisdom to dispel ignorance to go near the Lord in vāṭpōkki who grants his grace in an abundant measure.

மாறு கொண்டு
nurturing enmity in mind
வளைத்து எழுதூதுவர்
the servants of the god of death who start to take away the lives, surrounding them
வேறு வேறு படுப்பதன் முன்னமே
before separating body and life
ஆறு செஞ்சடை வைத்த வாட்போக்கியார்க்கு ஊறி ஊறி என் உள்ளம் உருகும்
my heart will melt towards the Lord in vāṭpōkki who placed the river on his red caṭai, with love which springs unceasingly.

running towards the cremation ground
கடிது எழுதூதுவர்
servants of yamaṉ who start quickly
தானமோடு தலை பிடியா முனம்
before taking out the life coming to our place and catching hold of our heads
ஆன் அஞ்சு ஆடி உகந்த வாட்போக்கியார்
the Lord in vāṭpōkki who felt joy in being bathed in the five products of the cow
ஊனம் இல்லவர்க்கு உண்மையில் நிற்பர்
will appear truly before those who have no fault of either sin or virtue.

பார்த்துப், பாசம் பிடித்து எழுதூதுவர்
the sevants of yamaṉ who hold a noose in their hand start on their work, being on the look-out for people whose lives are nearing their end
கூர்த்த வேலால் குமைப்பதன் முன்னமே
before they inflict pain by stabbing with their sharp lances
ஆர்த்த கங்கை அடக்கும் வாட்போக்கியார் கீர்த்திமைகள் கிளர்ந்து உரைமின்களே
praise in detail the fame of different kinds of the Lord in Vāṭpōkki who controlled the roaring Kaṅkai

நமன் தமர்
the relations of Namaṉ (Yāmaṉ)
நல்லிருள் நாடி வந்து கூடி வந்து குமைப் பதன் முன்னமே
before inflicting suffering seeking us and coming to us in the pitch darkness and joining in a group.
ஆடல் பாடல் உகந்த வாட்போக்கியை வாடி ஏத்த நம் வாட்டம் தவிருமே
all our troubles will leave us if we praise pining about the Lord in Vāṭpōkki who desires to dance and sing.

கட்டு அறுத்து
cutting off the bondages that bind us to the life in this world
கடிது எழுதூதுவர்
the servants of yamaṉ coming quickly
1. பொட்ட நூக்கிப் புறப்படா முன்னமே
before (they) thrust aside suddenly and return;

பொட்ட வல்லுயிர் போவதன் முன்னமே (appar, tiruveṭkaḷam, 6)]]
அட்ட மாமலர் சூடும் வாட்போக்கியார்க்கு 2. இட்டமாகி இணையடி ஏத்துமே
(People of this world!) praise the two feet having developed love towards the god in vāṭpōkki who adorns himself with eight kinds of flowers.

இரக்கம் முன் அறியாது எழுதூதுவர்
the servants of yamaṉ who come to us, not knowing what pity is.
பரக்கழித்தவர் பற்றுதல் முன்னமே
before they catch hold of our lives causing disgrace;
[[கொந்தள மாக்கிப் பரக்கழித்து (nācciyār tirumoḻi, 12-3)]]
அரக்கனுக்கு அருள் செய்த வாட்போக்கியார்
the Lord in vāṭpōkki who granted his grace to arakkaṉ (Irāvaṇaṉ)
கரப்பதும் கரப்பார் அவர் தங்கட்கே
will protect by hiding his devotees from being caught by them.
