வான் சொட்டச் சொட்ட நின்னு அட்டும் வளர்மதியோடு
in addition to the crescent which sheds its rays, pouring in the sky its moon-light.
அயலே தேன்சொட்டச் சொட்டநின்று அட்டும் திருக் கொன்றை சென்னி வைத்தீர்
you placed on your head the beautiful koṉṟai from which honeys flows, dripping by drops, by its side.
மான் பெட்டை நோக்கிமணாளீர்
the husband of Umai whose looks are like those of the female deer! (மணாளீர் the nominative of address of மணாளர்)
மணிநீர் மிழலையுள்ளீர்
you who are in miḻalai which was water like sapphire.
உம்மை நான் சட்ட மறக்கினும்
even if I forget you entirely
என்னை குறிக் கொள்மின்
guard me carefully.

அந்தமும் ஆதியும் ஆகி நின்றீர்
you are the end and beginning of all things.
அண்டம் 1. எண்திசையும் பந்தமும் வீடும் பரப்புகின்றீர்
you spread in the eight directions of all the worlds, bondage, and liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
பசு ஏற்று உகந்தீர்
you rejoiced in riding on a bull.
வெந்தழல் ஓம்பும் மிழலை உள்ளீர்
you dwell in miḻalai where brahmins maintain and guard the three fires.
என்னைத் தென்திசைக்கே உந்திடும் போது மறக்கினும்
even if I forget you when the god of death pushes me to the southern direction.
என்னைக் குறிக் கொள்மின்
guard me carefully

அலைக்கின்றநீர், நிலம், காற்று, அனல் அம்பரம் ஆகி நின்றீர்
you are pervading the moving water, the earth, the wind, the fire, and the sky.
கலைக்கன்றுசேரும் கரத்தீர்
you hold in your hand a young male deer.
கலைப்பொருள் ஆகி நின்றீர்
you are the real meaning of all the arts.
விலக்கு இன்றி நல்கும் மிழலையுளீர்
Civaṉ in miḻalai who gives everything to everybody without exception.
மெய்யில்கையொடு கால் குலைக்கின்று நும்மை மறக்கினும்
even if I forget you when my arms and legs do not move.
என்னைக் குறிக் கொள்மின்
guard me carefully.
[[குலைக்கின்று is the used in the sense of குலைத்தால்;
நாரணன் தன் வாடாத மலரடிக் கீழ்வைக்கவே வகுக்கின்று.... உரைத் தீராய் எனது உடலே,ஆமகிழ்ந்து கந்தவை மேய்க்கின்று உன்னோடு அசுரர்கள் தலைப் பெயில் எவன் கொல் -(tiruvāimoḻi, 1-4-9,10-3-7);
போகின்ற மாமுகிலே பொற்கயிலை வெற்பளவும் ஏகின்று.... என்னுள்ளுறு நோய் விண்ணப்பம் செய் (kayilai pāti kāḷatti pāti antāti, 75); this is an adverbial participle ending in கின்று this is found in works later than caṅkam literature;
தொள்ளாயிர நாழி செலவிடுவதும் செலவு முட்டுகின்றே ஐஞ்ஞாழி அரி தண்டப்படுவது (Travancore Archaeological series, kollam Civaṉ temple, latter half of the 11th century A.D.)]]

தீத்தொழிலான் தலை தீயில் இட்டு
throwing into the fire the head of (takkaṉ) who performed a scarifice and maintained the fire.
செய்தவேள்வி செற்றீர்
you destroyed the sacrifice that he performed.
பேய்த்தொழிலாட்டியைப் பெற்றுடையீர்
you begot a lady who reigned over the activities of a pēy;

having adorned himself with the cobra that lies on the shoulder, and the trident.
பத்திமையால் மேற்பட்ட அந்தணர் வீழியும் என்னையும் வேறுஉடையீர்
you have me and the shrine vīḻi in which brahmins who are superior by their piety, in a different way (He dwells in the high place of vīḻimiḻalai as well as in the low place of mind without any difference is the idea)
நாட்பட்டு வந்து பிறந்தேன், இறக்க
I was reborn very late in life only to die (embracing caivism is mentioned as rebirth)
நமன் தமர்தம் கோட்பட்டு நும்மை மறக்கினும்
even if I forget you being caught in the noose of the messengers of the god of death.
என்னைக் குறிக் கொள்மின்
guard me carefully.

கண்டியில் பட்ட கழுத்து உடையீர்
you have a string of uruttirākkam beads in your neck.
கரிகாட்டில் இட்ட பண்டியில் பட்ட பரி கலத்தீர்
you have an eating bowl of the skull of the body which was abandoned in the charred cremation ground, as an eating plate (பண்டி the body; the whole stands for the part.)
பதிவீழி கொண்டீர்
you had vīḻi as your place.
உண்டியில், பட்டினி(யில்), நோயில், உறக்கத்தில், ஐவர் கொண்டியில் பட்டு உம்மை மறக்கினும்
even if I forget you being caught in eating, fasting, disease, sleep and the plunder of my intellect by the five sense organs.
என்னைக் குறிக் கொள்மின்
guard me carefully.

தோற்றம் கண்டான் சிரம் ஒன்று கொண்டீர்
you removed one head of the creator (Piramaṉ) and had it in your hand.
தூய வெள்ளெருது ஒன்று ஏற்றம் கொண்டீர்
you rode on a spotless white bull.
வீழி மிழலை இருக்கை கொண்டீர்
you desired as your abode viḻimiḻalai
என்மேல் சீற்றம் கொண்டு
being angry, with me.
சிவந்து ஓர் பாசத்தால் வீசியவெங்கூற்றம் கண்டு
seeing the cruel god of death who threw on me the angry noose.
உம்மை மறக்கினும்
even if I forget you
என்னைக் குறிக் கொள்மின்
guard me carefully.

சுழிப்பட்ட கங்கையும் திங்களும் சூடிச் சொக்கம் பயின்றீர்
you practised cokkam (a dance of 108 poses) wearing on your head kaṅkai which has whirlpools, and a crescent
பழிப்பட்ட பாம்பு அரைப் பற்று உடையீர்
you wear in your waist a cobra which has reproach attached to it.
படர்தீப்பருக விழிப்பட்ட காமனைவிட்டீர்
you let the spreading fire to consume kamaṉ who appeared before you.
மிழலைஉள்ளீர்
Civaṉ who is in miḻalai!
பிறவிச் சுழிப்பட்டு நும்மை மறக்கினும்
even if I forget you being caught in the whirlpool of birth.
என்னைக் குறிக் கொள்மின்
guard me carefully.

பிள்ளையில் பட்ட பிறை முடியீர்
Civaṉ who wears on his head a young crescent!
மறை ஓதவல்லீர்
who is capable of chanting the vētams.
வெள்ளையில்பட்டது ஓர் நீற்றீர்
you have smeared yourself with the white holy ash.
விரி நீர் மிழலை உள்ளீர்
you are in miḻalai which has expanse of water.
ஐவர் நள்ளையில் பட்டு நக்கு அரைப்பிக்க
caught in the middle of the five sense organs which laugh at me and cause my life to be ground by sufferings.
நமன்தமர்தம் கொள்ளையில் பட்டு மறக்கினும்
even if I forget you caught in the plunder of the messengers of the god of death,
என்னைக் குறிக் கொள்மின்
guard me carefully.

கற்றுக்கொண்டு அரக்கன் கயிலையைப்பற்றிய கையும் மெய்யும் நெறுக்கென்று இறச்செற்ற சேவடியால்
with the red feet which destroyed the hands which caught hold of the mountain, kayilai, of the arakkaṉ with implacable hatred, and his body to break with a snapping sound. (நெறுக்கென்று momatopoiea)
கூற்றை நீறுசெய்தீர்
you killed the god of a death.
வெறிக்கொன்றை மாலை முடியீர்
you who wear on your head a garland of fragrant koṉṟai flowers!
இறக்கின்று நும்மை மறக்கினும்
even if I forget you when I am dying.
என்னைக் குறிக் கொள்மின்
guard me carefully.
