[[வீரட்டானம் is a corruption of வீரஸ்தானம்; it means the place where Civaṉ exhibited his valour.
They are eight in Tamiḻnāṭu: 1. Kaṇtiyur, 2. Kōvalūr, 3. Atikai, 4. Kuṟukkai, 5. Kaṭavūr, 6. Paṟiyal, 7. Viṟkuti and 8. Vaḻuvūr.
The following old verse gives the names of the places and the valourous deeds that Civaṉ did in them;
பூமன் சிரம் கண்டி; அந்தகன் கோவல் புரம் அதிகை; காமன் குறுக்கை; நமன் கடவூர்; இந்தக்காசினியில் மாமன் பறியல்; சலந்தரன் விற்குடி; மாவழுவூர், தேமன்னு கொன்றையும் திங்களும் ஆடதன் சேவகமே]]

one who has a caṭai
நெய் ஆடலானும்
who bathes in ghee
சரி கோவண உடை (1) உடையானும்
who dresses in a loin-cloth that slips away a little,
மை ஆர்ந்த ஒண்கண் உமைகேள்வனும்
who is the husband of Umai who has bright eyes on which collyrium is coated,
கடை உடை நல் நெடு மாடம் ஓங்கும் கடவூர் தன்னுள் விடையுடை அண்ணலும்
and the god who has a bull and who is in Kaṭavūr where tall storeys rise high and which have beautiful entrances.
வீரட்டானத்து அரன் அல்லனே
is he not Araṉ who is in Vīraṭṭāṉam?

{$} எரி தருவார் சடையானும்
one who has a long caṭai resembling fire;
[[ஏற்று வலன் உயரிய எரி மருள் அவிர்சடை, மாற்று அருங்கணிச்சி மணி மிடற்றோனும்- (puṟam, 56-1-2).]]
வெள்ளை எழுது ஏறியும்
one who rides on a white bull (ஏறி: is a noun).
புரிதரு மாமலர்க் கொன்றை மாலை புனைந்து ஏத்த
when mārkkaṇteyaṉ praised, adorning him with a garland of big koṉṟai flowers which he is fond cf.
கரி தரு காலனைச் சாடினானும்
one who killed Kālaṉ who is black in colour. (This has special importance to this shrine as it was here that Civaṉ killed the god of death to save mārkaṇtēyaṉ)
கடவூர்தனுள் விரிதருதொல் புகழ் வீரட்டானத்து அரன் அல்லனே
is he not araṉ in vīraṭṭaṉam in Kaṭavūr of ancient fame that has spread everywhere?

one who is the master.
நள்ளிருள் ஆடினானும்
who danced at midnight.
நளிர் போதின்கண் பாதனும்
one who places his feet in the hearts of devotees which are like cool lotus.
பாய்புலரித் தோலினானும்
who has the skin of a pouncing tiger.
பசு வேறியும்
who rides on a bull.
காதலர் தண்கடவூரினானும்
one who dwells in cool Kaṭavūr where those who bestow their love on Civaṉ, live.
கலந்து ஏத்தவே
when all the devotees join together and praise him
வேதம் (அது) ஓதியும் வீரட்டானத்து அரன் அல்லனே
is he not araṉ in vīraṭṭaṉam having learnt the vētams with their proper intonations? (ஓதி - ஓதினவன் ; a noun.)

{$} மழு அமர் செல்வனும்
the god who is fond of the battle-axe
மாசு இலாத பல் பூதம் முன், முழவு ஒலி, யாழ், குழல், மொந்தை கொட்ட முதுகாட்டிடைக் கழல் வளர் கால் குஞ்சித்து ஆடினானும்
who danced by upraising and bending the left leg on which there is a Kaḻal, in the cremation ground in the presence of many spotless pūtams, when muḻavu, lute, flute and montai (a drum with one face) were played.

கடவூர்தனுள் விழவு ஒலி மல்கிய வீரட்டானத்து அரன் அல்லனே
is he not araṉ in vīraṭṭāṉam where the bustle of festivals is increasing in Kaṭavūr?

{$} சுடர் மணிச் சுண்ணவெண்ணீற்றினானும்
Civaṉ who wears bright beads of uruttirākkam and well-powered white holy ash.
சுழல்வு ஆயது ஓர் படம் மணி நாகம் அரைக்கு அசைத்த பரமேட்டியும்
who is in the most exalted place and who tied a cobra with a hood and jewel, which form into a coil.
கடம் அணி மாஉரித் தோலனானும்
and who covers himself with an elephant's skin flayed from it.
விடம் அணிகண்டனும்
and the god who has a neck made beautiful by the poison.
கடவூர் தன்னுள் வீரட்டானத்து அரன் அல்லனே
is he not araṉ in Kaṭavūr vīraṭṭāṉam.

{$} பண்பொலி நான் மறை பாடி ஆடி
dancing, and singing the four vētams which are conspicious by their accent and intonation.
பல ஊர்கள் போய்
and going to many places.
உண்பலிகொண்டு உழல்வானும்
one who wanders receiving alms for food.
வானின் ஒளி மல்கிய கண்பொலி நெற்றி வெண் திங்களானும்
who has a white crescent whose brightness increases in the sky, located in the forehead where the eye is prominent.
வெண் பொடிப் பூசியும்
and who has smeared the white holy ash.
கிடவூர் தன்னுள் வீரட்டானத்து அரன் அல்லனே
is he not araṉ who dwells in vīraṭṭāṉam in Kaṭavūr?

{$} செவ்வழலாய் நிலன் ஆகி நின்ற சிவமூர்த்தியும்
one who has a body full of auspiciousness and who is the red fire and the earth.
முவ்வழல், நான்மறை, ஐந்தும் ஆய முனிகேள்வனும்
who is friendly towards the sages and who is the three fires, four vētams and five yākams.
கவ்வழல்வாய்க் கதநாகம் ஆர்த்தான்
who tied the angry cobras which inject poison when it bites.
கடவூர்தனுள் வெவ்வழல் ஏந்துகை வீரட்டானத்து அரன் அல்லனே
is he not araṉ in kaṭavūr, vīraṭṭāṉam, who holds in his hand a hot fire?

{$} அடி இரண்டு, ஓர் உடம்பு, ஐஞ்ஞான்கு இருபது தோள், தச முடியுடைவேந்தனை மூர்க்கு அழித்த முதல் மூர்த்தியும்
the eminent Civaṉ who has a body and who destroyed the pride of the King (Irāvaṇaṉ) who has ten heads, twenty shoulders, single body and two feet.
கடிகமழும் பொழில் சூழும் அம்தண் கடவூர்தனுள் வெடிதலை ஏந்தியும்
one who holds a skull of bad smell in cool and beautiful Kaṭavūr surrounded by gardens from which fragrance spreads.
வீரட்டானத்து அரன் அல்லனே
is he not araṉ in vīraṭṭaṉam?

{$} வரை குடையா மழைதாங்கினானும்
Māl who gave shelter from rain by holding the mountain as an umbrella
வளர் போதின்கண் புரை கடிந்து ஓங்கிய நான் முகத்தான் (உம்) புரிந்து ஏத்தவே
and the eminent Piramaṉ of four faces who is without blemish and who is seated in a growing lotus, to praise with love.
கரை கடல் சூழ்வையம் காக்கின்றானும்
Civaṉ who protects the world surrounded by the roaring ocean.
விரைகமழ் பூம்பொழில் வீரட்டானத்து அரன் அல்லனே
is he not araṉ who is in vīraṭṭaṉam which has fragrant flower-gardens?

{$} தேரரும் மாசு கொள் மேனியாரும் தெளியாதது ஓர் ஆர் அருஞ்சோற் பொருள் ஆகி நின்ற எமது ஆதியான்
our supreme being who is the rare words and their meanings which are full everywhere and who could not be clearly understood by the buddhists and camanar whose bodies are full of dirt.
கார் இளங்கொன்றை வெண் திங்களானும்
and who wears fresh flowers of koṉṟai which blossom in the winter, and a crescent
கடவூர்தனுள் வீரமும் சேர் கழல் வீரட்டானத்து அரன் அல்லனே
is he not araṉ who wears Kaḻal for his valour, also, in Kaṭavūr vīraṭṭaṉam?

{$} வெந்த வெண்ணீறு அணி வீரட்டானத்து வேந்தனை அந்தணர்தம் கடவூர் உளானை
about the King who smears himself with well- burnt sacred ash and who dwells in Kaṭavūr Vīraṭṭāṉam where brahmins are prosperous.
அணி காழியான்
native of Kāḻi which is an ornament to the world.
சந்தம் எல்லாம் அடிச் சாத்தவல்ல மறை ஞானசம்பந்தன செந்தமிழ் பாடி ஆடக் கெடும் பாவமே
sins will perish if one dances singing the songs composed in refined Tamiḻ by Ñāṉacampantaṉ well-versed in Vētam-s and who is able to adorn the feet of Civaṉ with all kinds of verses of rhythmic movement.
