WARNING: The HTML data provided on this CD-ROM (and especially the Tamil data) can only be viewed with a UNICODE-COMPLIANT operating system and browser; IT MAY REQUIRE THE INSTALLATION OF ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE!

TEST 1: can you read a Tamil word here: தேவாரம்?
if not, make your computer unicode-compliant.

AN EXAMPLE OF UNICODE-COMPLIANT operating system is Windows XP, once the suitable language options have been installed (Inside the "Panneau de Configuration", select the "Options Régionales et Linguistiques"/"Regional and Linguistic Options", then the "Langues"/"Languages" menu, then CHECK the option "installer les fichiers pour les langues à scripts complexes ..." if it is not already done [you may have to restart the computer after this]

CAVEAT: Although it is part of the Unicode Standard, not all unicode fonts have the "Latin Extended Additional"/"Latin étendu additionel" range (1E00-1EFF). If it is your computer's case, you may have to installe the URW Palladio UNI font in order to correctly view such characters as "t with dot below", etc. That font which is contained in the U_TEV/Fonts directory is not public domain and should not be given to third parties without the prior consent of Ulrich Stiehl.

TEST2: can you read these words, containing letters with diacritic marks: tōṭuṭaiya ceviyaṉ ?
If not, install a suitable font, containing the "Latin Extended Additional" characters.

This CD contains the transliterated tamil text (PIFI text) [HTML format] of 798 patikam-s (=385+312+101) as it appears inside the Tevaram edition (paN muRai) published by the French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP) under the guidance of T.V.Gopal Iyer and F. Gros:
PIFI 68-1, 1984
PIFI 68-2, 1985.

It also contains an English gloss (or translation) of the Tevaram (tala muRai), written by the late V.M. Subramanya Ayyar (VMS), when he was attached to EFEO, in 1976-1984. This translation had untill now remained unpublished. It mixes the Tamil text and the English gloss.

Revision History

Version 0.2 (and the following) contains a set of approximately one hundred interactive maps linked to the sites information sheets

There is also a collection of 133 pictures covering 13 sites (on a total of 275 "real" places, if we do not include Mount Kailash)

[Version 0.3)] Available from this version onwards is a draft concordance of Tevaram based on the PIFI text but linked to the VMS translation. This concordance contains 207 254 lines that show the various occurrences in the PIFI text of 45 000 different string items. Each line is linked to the VMS translation of the verse where it belongs. No attempt was made to lemmatize the concordance. The number of lexemes is not known.

[Version (0.4)] Some further 8000 bidirectional links have been added between the PIFI text and the VMS text. It is now possible to go by clicking from a verse to its translation and vice-versa

Version 0.5 makes use of frames. Navigation is easier. Also, quite a number of translations have been revised by SAS

Version 0.6 includes audio files in MP3 format. You need WinAmp or some other player in order to be able to listen to the MP3 files. Also, more translations have been revised by SAS Sarma.

Version 0.7 includes more audio files in MP3 format, more pictures, etc.

[[Note: a version of WinAmp (and a version of Netscape) is available on this CD. No warranty is given regarding its usage.]]

N. Ramaswamy and Dourairadj. the names have not yet been included in this version.

Version 0.9c The names of some of the villages, etc. appearing on the taluk maps have been included.

[(0.9d, 0.9e, 0.9f, 0.9g & 0.9f)] Version 0.9d, 0.9e, 0.9f, 0.9g & 0.9h [(currently being done)]: Further standardization is under way, as far as place names, variants, internal references, parallel passages are concerned. Links to outside servers have also been added.

[NEW!] Version 0.9u has switched to Unicode encoding.

[FORTHCOMING (To be done)]: A systematic survey of variants (both inside PIFI text and VMS text) is planned. A complete standardization of the reference to parallel passages (PP) is under way, as well as other improvements. Any suggestion is welcome.
